Making weak memory models fair

چکیده
Liveness properties, such as termination, of even the simplest shared-memory concurrent programs under sequential consistency typically require some fairness assumptions about scheduler. Under weak memory models, we observe that standard notions thread are insufficient, and an additional property, which call fairness, is needed. In this paper, propose a uniform definition for can be integrated into any declarative model enforcing acyclicity union program order reads-from relation. For well-known SC, x86-TSO, RA, StrongCOH, have equivalent operational presentations, show our condition to intuitive model-specific notion requires system fairly execute its internal propagation steps. Our preserves correctness local transformations compilation scheme from RC11 also enables first formal proofs termination mutual exclusion lock implementations models.

Weak Memory Consistency Models
Process coordination problems have been extensively addressed in the context of sequential consistency. However, modern multiprocessors present a large variety of memory models that are anything but sequentially consistent. In these machines, the ordering constraints on memory accesses are few. We re-address two fundamental process coordination problems in the context of weak memory models. We ...
متن کاملTaming Weak Memory Models
Speculative techniques in microarchitectures relax various dependencies in programs, which contributes to the complexity of (weak) memory models. We show using WMM, a new weak memory model, that the model becomes simpler if it includes load-value speculation and thus, does not enforce any dependency! However, in the absence of good value-prediction techniques, a programmer may end up paying a p...
متن کاملStability in Weak Memory Models
Concurrent programs running on weak memory models exhibit relaxed behaviours, making them hard to understand and to debug. To use standard verification techniques on such programs, we can force them to behave as if running on a Sequentially Consistent (SC) model. Thus, we examine how to constrain the behaviour of such programs via synchronisation to ensure what we call their stability, i.e. tha...
متن کاملFences in Weak Memory Models
We present a class of relaxed memory models, defined in Coq, parameterised by the chosen permitted local reorderings of reads and writes, and the visibility of interand intra-processor communications through memory (e.g. store atomicity relaxation). We prove results on the required behaviour and placement of memory fences to restore a given model (such as Sequential Consistency) from a weaker o...
متن کاملVerifying concurrent programs under weak memory models
Modern multicore processors provide weak memory models like TSO, PSO or even weaker execution semantics. These memory models – due to store bu ers – seemingly reorder program operations. Thus, they deviate from the commonly assumed sequential consistency (SC) semantics. Analysis and in particular veri cation techniques for concurrent programs consequently need to take these weak semantics into ...
